Isotopes and Atoms

Atomic Number
- atomic number : number of protons

atomic mass  - atomic number = # neutrons
( p + n )        -  ( p )                = ( n )

- The nuclei of 3 isotopes of Hydrogen

Protium - Deuterium - Tritium

- Isotopes - same atomic number but different mass

Mass Spectrometers
- are used to deterine the relative abundance and mass of the isotopes of elements

  1. A nice picture or diagram of a mass spectrometer would help a lot. In addition I'd like to see an explanation of how atomic masses can have decimals.
